In 1994, an astonishing discovery was made deep within the El Sidron cave system in northern Spain: the remains of 13 Neanderthals who lived approximately 50,000 years ago. Modern forensic analysis revealed a disturbing truth – these Neanderthals had fallen victim to cannibalism. Evidence suggested their skulls had been cracked open to access the nutrient-rich bone marrow. It also appeared that their tongues and brains had also been consumed. The group consisted of a family unit, including seven adults, three teenagers, and three children.

Interestingly, when the remains were first uncovered in 1994, they were mistakenly believed to belong to Spanish Civil War soldiers. This misunderstanding arose from the fact that during the war, the cave had been used as a hideout by Republican soldiers.

Unusual patterns in the bones indicated a high probability of inbreeding, suggesting that the local Neanderthal population was quite small. Given that Neanderthals disappeared from the fossil record approximately 40,000 years ago, this group could provide crucial insights into their eventual extinction. The theory is that Neanderthal communities gradually fragmented into smaller groups, restricting opportunities for diverse mating. This would lead to significant inbreeding, precipitating a range of disorders that weakened the species and ultimately contributed to their downfall.

Interestingly, the males within this group were all related, but the women seemed to have originated from outside the group. This implies that they weren’t entirely isolated from other groups in the region. However, the pervasive evidence of inbreeding found in the DNA of all individuals suggests that such practices had become commonplace during this time period.

Evidence of Neanderthals cannibalism

The nature of the cut marks and pitting, along with the cracked open bones, indicate that other Neanderthals were likely responsible for these acts. There were no signs of scratches or claw marks typically inflicted by predators. The broken bones suggest a clear intent to extract the marrow within. It was also determined that the individuals suffered from malnutrition, their diet largely composed of plants, nuts, and limited meat, lending credence to the theory that they may have been cannibalized by other individuals for survival.

With over 2,500 bones unearthed, the El Sidron site boasts the most extensive collection of Neanderthal fossils in Europe. While the active excavation phase has concluded, ongoing studies continue to analyze the bones and artifacts discovered within the cave.
