My Mind Is Mush
Indulge me for a moment as I ramble on. This tangent may not end how you think.
Attack On DEI
If you listen to me talk about DEI practices for a few minutes as a white, male, you would almost certainly think: "Ooh, he's a red hat."
I have noticed DEI practices going too far, but that doesn't mean we do not need them. Today, we need them just as much as we did 50 years ago. However.... 🤣
What I Remember
When I was in my early 20's I interviewed to work in a factory. I botched the interview on my own accord. Two women were interviewing me and it was going great, but then I got comfortable with them. So, when they asked me, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I responded with a joke(In my mind), "Hell if I know!"
Before I could elaborate that I was joking, and continue on, their smiles changed to contempt and they cut me off and said, "We will be in touch." That was that.
A week later I received a letter in the mail from the factory asking me to fill it out and mail it back to them. In the letter was a list of ethnicities. I was to check off my ethnicity and send it back to them. White, Caucasian, or even European descent were not options.
Another Anecdote
More recently at a job, we were down two crew members and were having trouble keeping up. The company finally had two people interview, A white man who had worked for the company in the past and was a damn good worker. He wouldn't even need training, he could just jump right in and get started. I was excited to see him back. He left on good terms and I knew he was a shoe in.
A black woman also interviewed. She was very nice, but had zero experience working in that environment and was going to take quite a bit of time to get caught up to speed. That's normal, but we needed help right then.
She was given a job offer the next day and started the following week. She also never was able to hit production goals and having to pull an employee away to train her caused us to be down another person, further straining the crew.
The man was finally hired about 3 weeks later. I witnessed this happen three different times over the course of working there. Each time a white male and a black woman were given interviews, the black woman would be hired immediately, the white man would show up a few weeks later.
Yet Another Anecdote
At another place I worked, they stopped hiring white people completely for 6 months because the black folks working there were complaining that the company wasn't hiring enough black people. It was noticeable because we had actual meetings about it.
The company actually said that they base hiring on the demographics of the area. We had several meetings on the situation. The white population of the area was 70% while the black population was only 20%, yet at the factory it is was closer to 30% white to 60% black. Still the company relented and hired based on race rather than qualifications.
I actually do agree with hiring based on demographics to a point. Having only whites working in a factory in a majority black community would be a major red flag. I have also worked in one of those, so it most definitely goes both ways.
What's Your Point, Asshole!?!
My point is, that to a certain degree, I do believe we have taken it too far. Just hire based on merit and if it is a factory job with virtually no entry barriers in terms of skills, then just go in chronological order and hire based on that. Simple. Then you won't have to worry about demographics as the law of probabilities will take care of that for you.
We still need the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) to deal with employers that act in bad faith. Probably more so than ever with the way the trans community is being treated as a pariah these day. Though that may be a stretch right now as the only companies they are going after are ones that aren't hiring enough white folks.
If Jesus were here today and saw how his "base" were treating their fellow human beings, he would disown them.
The political ideology swings I have witnessed in my lifetime are exhausting. We went super woke and started canceling anyone that speaks just like I did above, to now, we are just openly racist and are suppose to be fine with that as well.
I want to believe that the average joe falls somewhere in the middle of these two trains of thought, but I haven't seen that in my experience. I enjoy all people at a distance and hate everyone within 5 feet of me. To woe is me for being an introvert.
I Love Analogies
Analogies are a good way to put things into perspective. I overuse them daily. They are a good way of reducing confusion if the original premise is not relatable.
I heard an interesting analogy the other day. It goes very loosely like this:
If your boss was accused of fucking chickens would you believe it?
What if your boss had talked extensively about liking chickens a lot over the course of many years; would you start to believe it?
What if 30 different chickens from different places all over had said that your boss fucked them over the length of decades; would you start to believe it?
What if your boss was caught paying hush money to a chicken so that chicken wouldn't tell anyone that he fucked said chicken?
What if multiple chickens came forward claiming that your boss fucked them when they were chicks and then paid their rooster fathers money to not talk about it?
We could go on, but you get the picture. My question is, why are people still defending your boss? All I can say is that if you believe in hell; it looks like we will be seeing each other in the nether. Me for not believing in your imaginary friend; you for being an amoral POS. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.
